Please evaluate my profile?

by Aranya » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:19 am
Hey,
Would you please be kind enough to help me evaluate my profile for the TOP 15 B-Schools in the US?

Nationality: Indian
Age:21
Gender:Female
Languages known - English, Spanish,Bengali and Hindi

Education:
Class 10:80%
Class 12:90%
College:Bachelor's In Commerce(Honours){from the top college in my country}, Specialization-Marketing, CGPA:6.69

My dissertation was published by my college and ranked first with 96%

I was on the executive college commerce committee, core team member of the college journal and an AIESEC-er(L-Cong Logistics head of 2009)

Work Experience
Through out college I worked part time in a finance firm and upon graduation I continue to work in the same finance firm. I now lead a team of 10. I have mainly worked in auditing .The clients I have handled include regional banks,a retail giant and a major telecom company.

I am in the process of setting up a spa ( it should be fully functional by this year September). I have also collaborated with a Seychelles company to import, bottle, manufacture and sell a beauty and Cosmetics line of products.(We start production in August!)

Extra Curricular:
I have won national level debates, inter college(state and national) management events, drama and essay competitions. I have certificates in Indian classical music.

Social Service:
I have been involved with 2 local NGOs; one that helps orphans and street children and the other forms a support system for the victims of domestic violence.

I am yet to take my GMAT. However, I am scoring at the moment in the 710-730 range in my mocks. I plan to take it on June 21st.

Do, you think I have a chance to get through the ivy leagues or the other top colleges ( 2013,fall session)?
Also, could you recommend universities which are more suitable for a marketing/entrepreneurship profile?
Thanks a lot for your time.

Hi Aranya,

Looks like your are starting too early. At 21, you must be having not more than 1 yr of post graduation full time work ex. We would recommend that you focus on GMAT for now and may be take a month extra and score a 720+ or so. Add atleast one more year of work experience and then apply next yr.

Thank you for your reply. I am planning to apply fall,2013. By then I ll have 2 years and 1 month of work experience. I can not delay my MBA further due to personal reasons.
Would 2 years be too less? Is there any chance of getting through the Ivy league?

You will have 2 years by the time of joining and 1 yr at the time of application which is less. We again recommend that you wait for atleast 1 more year to stand a decent chance at top B schools.

Thank you for your reply. As much as I wish I could wait for another year it is not possible for me to do so.
I do understand and appreciate your advice and I really wish I could have worked for another year but I will have to take my chances this year.

Thanks again!

Have you considered top Masters in Management programs like those offered at LBS which target people with less experience?

If you do apply with only one year experience to an MBA program your GMAT score will have extra importance so study hard to ensure the highest score possible (hopefully over 750).

MBAPrepAdvantage has an amalgamated school rankings page (https://www.mbaprepadvantage.com/blog/mb ... -rankings/) that includes ranks for specialty so you might use this as a resource.

As far as suggesting schools, what are your career goals? This will help me to better advise you.

Hi Aranya,

A high GMAT score is important to offset a relatively lower GPA. I am not sure about your GPA in percentile terms. It will not be easy for you in top 15 B-schools unless you can show some entrepreneurial success. Since you are just starting out on your entrepreneurial work, it may not be easy to mention substantial achievements or learnings if you are targeting Fall 2013.

As Michael mentioned MIM may be an option.
