Hi Lisa,

I'm seeking admission to US MBA for Fall '09.

GMAT: 740 Q50 V40 AWA 5/6
Undergrad: Business in top local Singapore university, class of '06
GPA below 3 (pass w merit)
Nationality: Vietnamese
Experience upon enrolment: 3 years
Extra-curr: be involved in YCCV (a charity program) for 2 years in high school, redcross singapore in uni for 1 year, main-committee of vietnamese students in my uni (involved in many student-organised events), other small miscel activities. Since started working I don't have extra-curr any more.
My interests include Chinese and piano but haven't reached intermediate level.

I had worked 20 months in EY (Big 4) Singapore (Financial Services audit) before switching to my current role as management accountant with a public - listed manufacturing company. I scrutinise operations as well as performance of a subsidiary in Vietnam and report to Singapore's BoD. This include recommendations for improvements and pushing mgmt to implement those. Its business performance was bad but it's an interesting experience to see for real, and to deal with business management, operations and corporate governance issues.

I'm also taking ACCA and expect award of the qualification in Feb '09.

I'll have good reco letters from my current supervisor (either CEO or CFO) and from GM of the subsidiary. I think I will have stronger reco from here than from EY.

My MBA motivation is to start my own business.

I'm thinkin' of Boston, Emory, Notre Dame. In fact my dream school is Chicago Booth.

So:
1) What are my chances at the listed school?
2) Let's say if I delay my application for 2 or 3 years to improve community involvement record and work experience, do you think I'll have a chance at Chicago?
3) Can you suggest some schools that u think are good fit for me

Thank you much.

Dear smiling,

Based on what you posted, you seem to have the foundation for a competitive profile for Boston, Emory and Notre Dame. Chicago is a bit of a stretch, but I would encourage you to apply if it is your dream and you believe you can put together a compelling, strong application package. What makes the difference for any applicant is how well you put your application together. It is imperative you present a strong rationale for why you want a MBA, how it fits into your overall career plan, and why the school you are applying to is a good match for you. Likewise, you must distinguish yourself from the competition and demonstrate successful leadership experiences/evidence of leadership potential.

You could delay your application if you believe you will see some career progression and give you time to take on a leadership role outside of work. However, if you are ready to go to school now, then why would you want to wait? For additional insight on selecting schools, I would encourage you to visit our sticky on school selection.

Good luck,
Lisa
