Please evaluate and advise

by MBAsa » Mon Feb 10, 2014 10:34 am
Hi

Could you please evaluate my profile and offer advise. I feel have aimed very high and now I'm wondering if it is realistic.

GMAT Score = 660 Q48, V33
28 year old African, from South Africa
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering (65% aggregate)

I have 8 years working experience within the mining industry in South Africa. I manage a team of about 60 people.

I am targeting top schools such as LBS, Insead or Judge. My biggest worry is my GMAT score. I feel its a bit low for these schools. I want to improve my score but my problem is that my last attempt was my 4th attempt. Would taking the GMAT so many times affect my negatively affect my applications?

I also don't have any international exposure. Part of the reasons why I want to study abroad is so that I can experience what the world has to offer.

Your input and advise will be highly appreciated.

Regards
Mbasa

Hello Mbasa,
Actually I think you would have a good shot even at those schools. You work in a veeery specific industry from a country from which MBA programs don't see thaaaaaat many candidates. But what seems to me to be extra awesome is your AMAZING amount of leadership. I mean teams of 60!!!! Wow!

I'd have to dig more into detail about your profile work experience and everything to give you a more precise evaluation, but you are no ordinary candidate, and I think if you present a good MBA application, the schools are gonna LOVE that!

If you feel you have topped off already with your GMAT score, then don't retake. If you feel you still aren't hitting your peak, don't worry about taking it one more time

Best,
JF

Hi Jon

I applied for the second round at LBS. Unfortunately I didn't even make it to the interviews. I strongly believe that my GMAT score was my nemesis because I had a really strong story/brand to sell. So I have decided to try to improve my GMAT score before applying at INSEAD. I will work on my essays simultaneously with the GMAT and hopefully make the Jan 2016 intake.

Mbasa,
Well even with your unique background, it's true that when the average GMAT at LBS is about 720, it can make things harder.

So study hard, take some GMAT prep courses if you need, and good luck.

Make it happen this year!
