Please do give genuine and harsh comments on areas in which i need to improve..

Although ‘genius’ is difficult to define, one of the qualities of genius is the ability to transcend traditional modes of thought and create new ones.

Explain what you think the above statement means and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with this definition of genius. In your discussion, be sure to include at least one example of someone who, in your opinion, exemplifies genius or a particular characteristic of genius.

The term 'genius' is a highly debatable and controversial one. While some people believe that one quality of genius is to rise above the orthodox thought and innovate new ones, other argue that a person is a 'born' genius and it doesn't matter how he performs or how he thinks. But a close analysis of this issue reveals that no matter what genetic qualities one have, he/she can exceed above the world with innovative ideas

Perhaps the biggest example of 'genius' is the great man Leanardo Da Vinci. Not only he was a great artist of his time, but also he was a doctor, physicist, a theatre person and great thinker among other things. Moreover, he had the ability to forsee the world unlike other people and performers of his era. It is believed that he innovated the design of the airplane long before Wright brothers actually implemented the idea. What made this man such a remarkable one? Some analysts believe that his mind always raced ahead of time. He used to see and handle things with a completely new dimension, a new approach. This ability made Leanardo perhaps the greatest creator of all time.

In modern era of cut-throat competition, the definition of 'genius' remains the same. In today's world, a businessman, a sportsperson or anybody must possess the ability to outsmart the competitor. For example, One can look into Virgin Atalantic chairman Richard Brasnon, exemplifying the great aura and creativity of a third generation leader. His intellectual thinking and ability to predict what the customer wants make him so successful that all the market pundits rate him in the top. His company has been able to achieve so much in such a short time as no other airline company ever did. Moreover, Virgin is now strengthening its position in Media, Communications and even space exploration.

It can be argued that to stick to the traditional ways is not harmful at all. But the consumer preferences and taste has changed a lot now. There is so much competition in the market that even new products find it difficult to capture people's attention. For instance, India's favorite small car for more that two decades, Maruti 800 is going off production soon. Chairman of the Suzuki Maruti India recently admitted that production of this model is no longer profiable for the company because company refused to come over traditional features of the Maruti 800.

Finally, it can be conluded that a genius has the ability to create new approaches to work and develop new thoughts. These superb abilities make him rise above others and leads him to the way of success.

Rahul,

Nice essay; strong points; solid examples; however, I could not understand whether you agreed or disagreed with the present issue. Usually, I have noticed Kaplan, Princeton, and other books preach to explicitly state one's viewpoint in the opening paragraph as a thesis statement.

You did mention that the term "genius" is highly debatable and requires further introspection, but I could not find the statement whether you agreed or disagreed. Do know if not stating one's viewpoint in the essay can count against "us" in the GMAT?
