The picking numbers/plugging-in numbers strategy is an indispensable one on GMAT, but never take it as working for all types of problems there. A different problem is designed to test a different concept or strategy than just the picking numbers/plugging-in numbers strategy.

There are a many occasions when picking numbers works, but it certainly doesn't help in all cases. You should look for problems where there are variables in the answer choices or the question stem and where the problem involves percents but doesn't specify values. Be very sure you are picking numbers that are permissible and manageable and check all the answer choices. Be prepared to pick a second set if your choice produces more than one correct answer.
