With the success of the MP3 format, CD retailer Musicfest is going out of business. At first the store discounted all its albums 40%. Today, the store is adding an additional discount of 25% off the already discounted price of albums. The two discounts are equal to a total discount of:

A.70%
B.55%
C.65%
D.15%
E.32.5%

original price = x
price after first discount = y
price after 2nd discount = z

y = 0.6x (after 40% discount on x)

z = 0.75y (after 25% discount on y)
= 0.75(0.6x)
= 0.45x

So the final price, z, is only 45% of the original price x. Therefore the total discount is 55%.

Choose B.

Let pick number for this question

100 present for the original price, so 60 must be the current price, and 25% of 60 = 15 ( you can use 1/4 if you remember )

Then total discount is 15 + 40 = 55 or 55% of the original price

Then B
