percentage to gpa conversion

Hi Jon,

Can you please help me out with percent to gpa conversion ;what does 73.34 % convert into GPA ; going through several sources i am getting different values from 2.3 to 3.4 .

What should i consider got an agg. of 73.34 in electical engineering from a government college.

if i use : https://easycalculation.com/statistics/p ... ge-gpa.php then i get a GPA of 3.5

but if i use the mba.com

4.0 Scale A-F 100-0 1-5 Four Passing Grades Three Passing Grades

4.0 A 90-100 1 Highest Passing Grade Highest Passing Grade
3.0-3.9 B 80-89 2 Second Highest Passing Grade Middle Passing Grade
2.0-2.9 C 70-79 3 Third Highest Passing Grade Lowest Passing Grade
1.0-1.9 D 60-69 4 Lowest Passing Grade Fail
0.0-0.9 F Below 60 5 Fail Fail


then on 100 -0 scale i score : 2.3 still confused what to write

does the scale 100 -0 denotes the percentage from o t0 100 so that i could write 73.34 % = 2.3 GPA

PLEASE DO HELP !!!!

MBA.com is using the US system, in which in the style of American grade inflation, almost nobody gets under an 80. In India, as we all know, that is not the case! :)

Now, I don't know this easycalculation.com site, but lots of folks do use the wes.org calculations, and business schools seem to accept these, so maybe check out your grades there.

And keep in mind, that these things aren't set in stone. Meaning a 3.7 from Princeton, and a 3.7 from Hofstra is not the same 3.7, even in the US, so the schools will make a distinction both based on where you went and on what you studied.

Jon, While filling application form on MBA.com for GMAT registration, it asks for GPA and gives a table for conversion. According to that conversion a percentage between 70-80% (Most observed in India) is given a GPA of only 2-3. Won't it be very low(Some 2.5 or 2.7) for a student who is bright and has been among the top students but still scored near 75-80 since his/her university's highest grades are in that range.
I was filling the registration form and struck there. My grad % is 74% (First class, just short of distinction). Is it ok to select 2.4 GPA for that. Is this same GPA used in 5 Schools we select before GMAT, or the schools will ask separately for GPA or % in their respective application forms?

Well, first of all, check out two things:
1. Make sure the school wants you to convert your grades (many or even MOST programs actually prefer that you report grades in your original marking system)
2. If you need to convert them, you could write a quick email to the AdCom of the school, asking them which conversion system they recommend.

Finally, if you feel that the numbers are coming up with little relevance, it's important that you explain such a thing in your optional essay.

But I am still in doubt, I know most schools do not ask for GPA, but I wanted to know whether I shall fill 2.3 in my MBA.com application (I guess it is a compulsary field to enter). Will the same GPA be used in future correspondence with the schools I apply.

Q: What to fill as GPA in MBA.com GMAT registration application form ? How does that make difference?

Hey Jon,
As you suggested 'wes.org' for GPA calculations, they say that one needs to provide all the subjects in the Undergrad with corresponding marks obtained for accurate GPA calculations.
Now I'm a B.Tech from India and as you might know that it's a 4 year course with 8 semesters and FYI at least 40 subjects in 4 years (on an average 5 subjects in each semester).
My question is: do I need to enter all the 40 subjects(or even more) with corresponding marks obtained..?

Well maybe... what are you trying to figure out??
Like we said, anyhow in most cases, schools will be looking at your Indian grades... so for what purpose are you doing this conversion?? For yourself?? something else?

If it's for yourself then it's not all that useful in my opinion. Because you get into the varying and sometimes arbitrary systems that are trying to translate two systems that are not necessarily translatable. If you want to figure out where you stand the most important things are:
1. your ranking/performance in comparison to that of your peers
2. your school's prestige/ranking in comparison to other schools in your country.

The MBA programs which you will be applying to will be more or less at least somewhat aware of these things, and whatever they don't yet know, you will need to tell them.

How do schools know about the prestige of the schools ? Just curious. Any thoughts?

Good question. The way it works in reality, is that AdComs will likely know the top 3 or five schools of each country pretty well. When it comes to schools that aren't "the most famous" they will likely not know all that much about the school other than "it's not the top school". That is why it is soooo important that YOU tell them. Say for example you go to a university that isn't that highly ranked, but let's say that for journalism it's the number one ranked school in the country... you want to make sure the adcom knows this, and the only way to do that is to inform them yourself!! So try and take an active role in promoting your candidacy by promoting your school.

thanks Jon! 2 quick questions:
Q1- I did my undergraduate course from an NIT in India. Do you think that adcoms know NIT. NITs are considered extremely prestigious after IITs (they are extremely difficult to get in). Almost all Indians know them. I am not sure about adcoms in the US. Please share your thoughts.

Q2 - About letting the schools know about the school rank, do we have to cite any journal/magazine, stating the rank? (ranks change quite often). Also, what's a good place to let the adcoms know about the rank? Essays/Resume? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

The Adcoms will likely know of NITs, so that is all the better for you. but at the same time, it wouldn't hurt to remind them. It is good if you have a source for the ranking you are presenting, but you do not necessarily need to present the source itself to the AdCom.

The place I think that is most natural for this "Explanation" is in your resume, you would make a "Company description" line (in this case school description) right after the name where you would write "India's number 2 ranked program in business" or whatever. And if you have space for it in the Application Form, then add it there as well. I don't think you need to put it in your essays, unless you have an essay that focuses exclusively on your academics, in which case I would suggest adding it.

May I plz know how to convert c.g.p.a. to percentage on ten point scale. I have got 8.37 c.g.p.a , what percentage is equivalent to it?
