Baker was perhaps not the most gifted soloist in the orchestra, but the conductor felt what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by the passion with which he played the music.

(A) what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(B) what he lacked in technical skill was more than made up by
(C) whatever was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(D) whatever he lacked in technical skill was more than made up for by
(E) whatever he lacked in technical skill he more than made up by

IMO C

I am not sure ...."whatever" seems to take in to "totality" of all the "defects" of Baker.

even A seems to be contender. But I go with C.

Answer is option D... lacked and played are parallel...Options A and C clear lack parallelism, whereas B and E use incorrect idiom, 'made up by' it should be made up for. Choose D.

IMO A

B, D and E - are wrong. Lacking parallelism. You cann't compare he and passion.

I chose A over C because WHATEVER looks more complicated than WHAT.

we need passive. E is out.

check meaning logic

"he lacked" is more logic than "what lacked". A and C are out

B and D are left. I think the idiom is "made up for" .

can be easy if you pick up on the idiom "made up for", so only D is correct.
"made up by" means something is composed of...
"made up for" means to make amends for...

What is the correct answer?

I, finally, shortlisted B and D.

But in D is better. As the original sentence introduce Main clause 1, but...Main clause 2 + (subordinate clause).

whenever introuces subordinate clause.

"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group
