Popular child psychologists have advocated that parents discipline male children similarly to the fashion in which they discipline daughters.

(A) similarly to the fashion in which they discipline
(B) in the same manner that they would use with
(C) like they would handle
(D) as they discipline
(E) as they would

E sounds the best - the verb form should be in subjunctive mood.

At second it doesnt add on to the meaning that they necessarily have daughters.

this is a case of ellipsis I guess. [ we really don't need a second 'discipline' in the later part of the sentence. ]

I am not sure about this though. On exam day I would have gone by my instinct and would have chosen E
