Sentence correction Q on parallelism..

Often credited as the founder of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer both contributed to a growing canon of English literature, extended the capabilities of the language, and using it to invent a new poetic meter.
(A) literature, extended the capabilities of the language, and using it
(B) literature, extended the capabilities of the language, and used it
(C) literature and extended the capabilities of the language, using it
(D) literature, extending the capabilities of the language and using it
(E) literature and, extending the capabilities of the language, using it

Can you explain the logic behind your answer?

IMO C
the sentence takes the form both x and y
also, using modifies Geoffrey Chaucer

Well it more of a guess. I could not understand the use of both.

contributed, extended and used are parallel.

However clause extended should be participle+ing , which is there in D. But D uses using which violates the parallelism.

B is correct if both is not present , since then we will have three actions however both restricts it to two.

C looks fine to me....

contributed & extended are parallel & using it.... modifies language.

In B, the it has no clear antecedent & as far as i know both X and Y is correct rather than both X,Y and Z(sounds crazy..)

In D, contributed & using are not parallel...
