Hey folks,

I have a short questions regarding a parallelism

The question is as follows:
It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits.
Answer choices are:
A) the frequency of inventories turnovers can be
B) the frequency of inventories turnovers is often
C) the frequency with which the inventory turns over is often
D) how frequently is the inventory turned over are often
E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be

I thought the right solution is D because I spottet the parallelism marker "and" ("items are placed on shelves" needs to be parallel with "frequently is the inventory turned over"). I thought so because I saw a passive construction "items are placed" and looked for a passive construction in the answer choices -> "inventory turned over".

But why is the right answer E?? Why is "the inventory turns over" parallel to "are placed on shelves"?? (-> "turns" parallel to "placed"!!??)

Can somebody please help me out with this?

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply.

You say that it is: question + subject + present tense, but isn't the same thing true for answer D?
"the frequency" -> subject
"turned over" -> passive construction

?

I am sorry that I have to ask again :S - but could you please help me out again and shed some more light on this issue?

I am not very sure, but the phrase "How frequently IS the inventory turned over" is trying to say that someone is probably responsible for turning the inventory and how frequently he/she turns the inventory is what is crucial to the profits.. This is certainly not the intended meaning..
