I think there is a typo in the problem...it should be his contributionS and not contribution to have subject verb agreement between contributionS and were..
A.than were almost any other--> Incorrectly compares contributions to any other physicians.
B.than were those of almost any other--> Correct...those refer to contributions. correctly compares contributions to contributions..
C.than almost any --> Incorrect comparison you MUST include any other not only any OR other alone...
D.than almost any other -> Incorrect comparison..
E.as were those of almost any -> Correct idiom for comparison is more than not more as...
B is correct....

My 2 cents. Here we are making comparisons. Always determine "How many" things are compared.

Here " paul dirac contributions & paul dirac himself "are compared to that of other physicians. So we need "those(as in option B) to connect the comparison of "contributions" of the both .
