If you say "in contrast to", then you don't HAVE to mention both statistics... Although you still can mention.

Examples:
"In contrast to the corresponding rate in Esteria, the unemployment rate in Burdistan fell last month." -- CORRECT! In this case, the "in contrast to" construction implies that the Esterian rate went up. We don't actually have to say this explicitly.

But, if you want, you can mention both statistics:
"In contrast to the corresponding rate in Esteria, which rose by 0.5%, the unemployment rate in Burdistan fell by 0.3% last month." -- ALSO CORRECT!

Courtesy: Ron Purewal, GMAT Expert.
Are we saying that with compare to/with we have to explicitly mention the rates...
This post already clarifies your question. I suggest that you go through the entire thread once.

Not sure what possessed me to do this, but I made an excel file to share with everyone. It is easier to cut the information in excel format. Thanks.

Hi,

Had a question re your collective noun post. Please can you tell me why the below is wrong?

The audience is requested to leave by the exit on the left.

Wont this also pass as correct along with the sentence that you had posted.

THanks,
Ash

You may find this text below in the link.

In AmE (American English), collective nouns are usually singular in construction: the committee was unable to agree. AmE, however, may use plural pronouns in agreement with collective nouns: the team take their seats, rather than the team takes its seats. The rule of thumb is that a group acting as a unit is considered singular and a group of "individuals acting separately" is considered plural.

Please write back if you've any doubts.

The majority of the students have bunked today's class. -- CORRECT! Students is a countable noun.

Question
before you said that possessive = 's = use only with the names of living things
but in this sentence, you wrote... "today's" class
so today is considered as "names of living thing"

could you please clarify this

thanks

Hey guys,

Thanks for your interest and i'm glad that you find these flashcards useful. Actually, i'm done with posting all my flashcards. Hence, i will not be posting anymore. However, we can discuss as a group on any particular concept in SC here.

Just one clarification!!
Are we sure on the "one of the X that/who Y" scenarios mentioned in the flashcard?

especially
one of the X that/who <plural>
only one of the X that/who <plural>
the only one of the X that/who <singular>?

According to BeatTheGMAT flashcards: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/free-gma ... flashcards
only one of the X that/who <plural> SHOULD BE Singular!!
