Ozone reaches high concentrations twelve miles above Earth, where it has long appeared that it was immune from human influence; we have now realized, though, that emissions of industrial chlorofluorocarbons deplete the ozone layer.

Choice d is my pick

Had is required as we have " We have realized"

and the correct idiom is "immune to", leaving choices D and E

The sentence is trying to say: the thought of ozone had been accepted but we have now......

first of all "immune to" is correct idiom
since the sentence says that "we have now realized" means that realization start from the past and continue till now ==> the previous sentence is an action occuring before that ==> use "had long appeared".
on the other hand, when the underlined portion mention the subject by using "it" no need to have it again after 'had long appeared'

"immune to" is the correct idiom!

He is immune to virus.
A special kind of bacteria is immune to anti-biotics.

He is immune from Virus is wrong!!

But in option D is the use of HAD correct ?
I mean does it fulfill the use of past perfect tense.
