Given that 60 percent of the total number of employees (1,000) work in research, the number of employees working in research = 60% of 1,000 = 600

Thus, the number of employees who do not work in research = 1,000 - 600 = 400 ---(1)

Given that out of a total of 1,000 employees, 52 percent are female, the number of female employees = 52% of 1,000 = 520

Thus, the number of male employees = 1,000 - 520 = 480

Given that 40 percent of these females (520) work in research, the number of female employees who work in research = 40% of 520 = 208 ---(2)

From (1) and (2), we have the number of male employees who work in research = 600 - 208 = 392

Thus, the number of male employees who work in research = 480 - 392 = 88

The correct answer: E

We see that there are 1,000 x 0.52 = 520 females and 520 x 0.4 = 208 females work in research, and 1,000 x 0.6 = 600 total employees work in research; thus, 600 - 208 = 392 males work in research.

Since there are 1,000 - 520 = 480 total males, 480 - 392 = 88 do not work in research.

Answer: E
