I'm sorry but after reviewing the question I have to cancel my interpretation - I think this question is not a good material for practice. It seems really poorly written. What source does it come from?

The bold-faced 'their' lacks antecedent. (family is singular, hence their can't apply to family's). The second 'their' applies to people.

Exactly, this is the reason of rejecting choice A and B.
Now how can anyone OverRule this basic thing. Is there anything I am lacking here?
