“Nations should cooperate to develop regulations that limit children’s access to adult material on the Internet.”*
*The Internet is a worldwide computer network.
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

answer

Without any doubt one can say that Internet is one of the most important modes of communication in today's fast paced world. Through Internet information can be shared without any time delays and at cheaper rate. Plus Internet is so huge that it allows us to collect information about almost any topic. But then also I agree with the above quotation. We really need collective job of different countries in regulating access of internet to children. In next few paragraphs I would like to provide example and statements which will support my views.

First of all, as information on Internet is easily available it can be easily viewed or used by children. Children don't have very good knowledge and judgement about differentiating good things from bad things. Plus as it is easy to create an impression on children's mind chances are that bad information available on internet can affect children's mind. For example on internet one can very easily find sites which contain lot of nudity, sexual or pornographic material or sites which have information related to violence and fire arms such as how to create a bomb with things available in day to day life or how to use gun etc. If children come across such kind of material then chances are that that particular information can be used in wrong manner by them. Moreover certain sites are hacking sites and they can take control of user's computer without user's permission. Later on confidential information such as credit card information and SSN of user gets shared with wrong people. It is easily possible that children will use their parent's computer and due to some wrong mouse clicks and accessing wrong sites confidential information about parents gets into wrong hands.

Therefore, I think that collective effort from different countries is required to control usage of internet by children. Through collective effort countries can share information, technology and best know methods (BKMs) regarding wrong internet usage by children. Collective effort will be far more effective and will produce very fast results with respect to controlling internet usage.

I would like to provide few examples which depict wrong usage of Internet by children. Few months back a student from Virginia Tech. University used fire arms to do random firing which killed some university faculty and students. And around the same time one teenager from India was lured by con-man from internet. Con-man had promised that teenager through chatting that he will give a new bike to that teenager. In both cases, victims were mislead by internet use!

In short, I think that Internet usage by children should be monitored. But, I would also like to recommend that this monitoring should be prudent. Internet is very effective tool of learning knowledge and sharing information and we shouldn't completely block access of children to Internet.
