I plugged in values. Ive put it in a table format I hope its clear.

Let ----------------- x = 68----------------------- y=34

Remainder when-------4-----------------------------2
divided by 8

multiply with 3--------204--------------------------102

Remainder when
divided by 8----------- 4----------------------------- 6

Let-------------------x = 18-----------------------y=33

Remainder when------2------------------------------1
divided by 8

multiply with 3--------- 54---------------------------99

Remainder when--------6----------------------------3
divided by 8
Hence St 1 alone is SUFF.

You can use the same numbers and try for 5x and 5y you'll get St 2 also SUFF.

So I believe answer should be D. Whats the OA??

One more vote for D)



If x and y are going to leave the same remainders when divided by an integer(in this problem 8) then any integer mutiplied to x and y (i.e thier mutiples) will also leave the same remainder

Eg: x=2 x/8 = rem 2 y=10 y/8 = rem 2

3*2 = 6 / 8 rem -- 6 3*10 = 30 / 8 rem - 6

Stmt I)

Based on the explanation above x and y dont leave the same remainders when divided by 8

SUFF

Stm II

Based on the explanation above x and y dont leave the same remainders when divided by 8

SUFF

Two interesting approaches, both got correct answer.
4me, cramya's approach is more handy - I don't like to plug values.
However, in this problem I used mals24's approach to recieve answer D
