Hi Stacy,

I am considering a career change but concerned that I am too old for a full time MBA. I'm currently 29 and would like to apply for entry next fall, when I'll be 30. I'm worried that business schools won't be interested in me because I'm too old.
Also, I've hear that recruiters aren't interested in older applicants. Why would you take a 32 year-old who you'd have to pay more when you can get a 27 year-old for less.
Some additional info on me: I have a BSN and MSN from a reputable school. Four years of clinical nursing experience but no management work. Recently graduated from MSN program and will rejoin the work force in the fall as an Advanced Practive Nurse at a prestigious hospital, excellent salary. I'm interested in a Healthcare Management MBA or MBA/MPH program.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear HealthcareMBA,

Entering business school at 30 is not considered too old. While you might be closer to the high end of experience, you will certainly not be the oldest person in the class nor the only one in your 30s. As for recruiters, they do not base salary offers on the age of the candidate, but on what the market value is of the position. If you wish to stay in healthcare, I would encourage you to do some research on the different career opportunities so you can determine where you want to be in the field--hospital administration, consulting, pharmaceutical companies, or working with related vendors.
