Thelonious Monk, who was a jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted in the
stride-piano tradition of Willie (The Lion) Smith and Duke Ellington, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream jazz repertory.

(A) Thelonious Monk, who was a jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted

(B) Thelonious Monk, the jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work that was rooted both

(C) Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, who produced a body of work rooted

(D) Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk produced a body of work that was rooted

(E) Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk produced a body of work rooted both


OG says option A and B are confusing but I don't find any confusion.The modifier is correctly placed between two commas and correctly modify Monk.

Please help how to tackle such questions.

Most often, easy way to figure out these kind of questions is the find the structure of the sentence. Since original sentence uses both, the structure has to be: ..both X and Y. In other words, there has to be an and in this structure.

In (A) X is rooted, Y is Duke Ellington. So, the structure of the sentence is: ...both rooted...and Duke Ellington..... As you can see, this does not make logical sense.

In (B), X is in the stride-piano tradition of Willie..., Y is Duke Ellington. So, the structure of the sentence is: ...both in the stride-piano tradition of Willie...and Duke Ellington..... Again, as you can see, this does not make logical sense.

While the correct option does not use both at all, if both had to be used, it should have been:

....rooted in the stride-piano tradition of both Willie (The Lion) Smith and Duke Ellington....

Here X would be Willie.. and Y would be Duke Ellington. Now these are logically similar.
