A - The use of 'like' is incorrect
Like - used to compare nouns or gerunds
As - used to compare clauses

B - Correct

C - 'being today often...' very clunky and confusing

D -
1. Calls the internet an "information highway" - distorts the meaning
2. "with the internet, called an 'information highway' - adds to the issue in point 3.
3. The sentence compares "as is often the case today" with "the telegram"

E - Similar to X (the internet), Y (the telegraph)... This is NOT a comparison, but rather a noun modifier. This would mean the internet is similar to the telegraph - distorts the meaning
