Tiger beetles are such fast runners that they can capture virtually any non flying insect . However, when running towards an insect , a tiger beetle will intermittently stop and then, a moment later, resume its attack. Perhaps the beetles cannot maintain their pace and must pause for a moment's rest; but an alternative hypothesis is that while running, tiger beetles are unable to adequately process the resulting rapidly changing visual information and so quickly go blind and stop.

Which of the following, if discovered in experiments using artificially moved prey insects, would support one of the two hypothesis and undermine the other?
1. When a prey insect is moved directly towards a beetle that has been chasing it, the beetle immediately stops and runs away without its ususal intermittent stopping.
2. In pursuing a swerving insect, a beetle alters its course while running and it pauses become more frequent as the chase progresses.
3.In pursuing a moving insect , a beetle usually responds immediately to changes in the insect's direction, and it pauses equally frequently whether the chase is up or down the incline.
4.If , when a beetle pauses, it has not gained on the insect it is pursuing, the beetle generally ends its pursuit.
5. The faster a beetle pursues an insect fleeing directly away from it, the more frequently the beetle stops.

Ok here is the reasoning. I need to choose an option that strengthens one theory and weakens other. So the two theories are

1 beetles stop coz they get tired of running
2 beetles stop to process visual data.

so lets see the options:

A The beetle's response is not disussed so this is out of scope. Moreover we are discusing insances of stoping which is ruled out here.

B As the insect swerves visula data wil change but the beetle doesen't stop. This weakens theory 2. But the beetle's stops become more frequent as time passes which signifies physical exertion. PERFECT

C The beetle stops equally whether chase is up or down. this means that the stops are not due to physical exhaustion. Hence this option doesen't strengthen theory 1.

D This is how beetle interprets the purpose of his chase and is out of scope.

E Ok this does strenthen theory 1 but it says nothing to weaken theory 2.

Ok got it where I went wrong

2) hypothesis mentions word 'stop'. stop here doesn't mean that a bettle stops permanently, it stops only to gain visual information
rite?

the answer in to the question u've referred to is C because answer choices are different in the question from testmagic.com than in the question posted in this post..
so answer to the question posted above should still be B..
please read answer choices of both the questions.. they are different..

and it pauses equally frequently whether the chase is up or down the incline.
Never thought I will need to think logically also for CR. This question enlightens me. When the chase is up it should be pausing more frequently than if the chase is down.(If the beetle had problems to keep their pace.)

If the question was framed differently... say which point strengthens both hypothesis... will A fit ??

A --> When a prey insect is moved directly towards a beetle that has been chasing it, the beetle immediately stops and runs away without its ususal intermittent stopping

because the beetle could see the prey moved directly towards the bettle which it had been until now chasing.... (2)
and because they did not need to take rest as they ran intermittently (1).
