I'm a bit confused by the book's answer to the question. Can anyone explain the answer clearly? Thank ya'll.

138. In no other historical sighting did Halley's Comet cause such a worldwide sensation as did its return in 1910-1911.

I chose d simply because of parallel construction and the book's answer threw me off.

Anyone care to chime in? I finally understand the quesiton.

138. In no other historical sighting did Halley's Comet cause such a worldwide sensation as did its return in 1910-1911.

a. did its return in 1910-1911
b. had its 1910-1911 return
c. in its return of 1910-1911
d. its return of 1910-1911
e. its return in 1910-1911

The event, worldwide sensation, is caused by Hally's Commet. "did" is not acting as a verb, but rather as a particple. The sentence deals with two independent events( in this case, two independent appearances of Hally's Comet). Thus, "in no other historical sighting" should be compared to "in its return of 1910-1911." D is comparing "historical sighting" to the result after Halley's Comet returned.

Answer is c. [/u]

The event, worldwide sensation, is caused by Hally's Commet. "did" is not acting as a verb, but rather as a particple. The sentence deals with two independent events( in this case, historical sighting and the actual appearance of Hally's Comet). Thus, "in no other historical sighting" should be compared to "in its return of 1910-1911." D is comparing "historical sighting" to the result after Halley's Comet returned.
