OG 12 question 26

by kullayappayenugula » Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:25 pm
When a polygraph test is judged inconclusive, this is no reflection on the examinee. Rather, such a judgment means that the test has failed to show whether the examinee was truthful or untruthful. Nevertheless, employers will sometimes refuse to hire a job applicant because of an inconclusive polygraph test result.

Which of the following conclusions can most properly be drawn from the information above?

(A)Most examinees with inconclusive polygraph test results are in fact untruthful.
(B)Polygraph tests should not be used by employers in the consideration of job applicants.
(C)An inconclusive polygraph test result is sometimes unfairly held against the examinee.
(D)A polygraph test indicating that an examinee is untruthful can sometimes be mistaken.
(E)Some employers have refused to consider the results of polygraph tests when evaluating job applicants.

I chose A as the answer. I was assuming that the employer was unwilling to take select the examinee because there might be higher chance of hiring an untruthful person. OA C.

It is stated in the first premise that an inconclusive polygraph test is not a sign of the examinee's untruthfulness. Answer A stands in opposition to this premise and thus it is incorrect.
The second premise tells us that employers sometimes don't want to hire a job applicant whose test result is inconclusive, although such a result does not prove that the applicant is untruthful. Therefore, we can infer form the two premises that employers treat applicants whose test results are inconclusive UNFAIRLY by treating them in the same way as they treat the applicants who lied. So answer C is the right one.
