A part-time employee whose hourly wage was increased by 25 percent decided to reduce the number of hours worked per week so that the employee's total weekly income would remain unchanged. By what percent should the number of hours be reduced?

A) 12.5%
B) 20%
C) 25%
D) 50%
E) 75 %

I am having trouble deciding when it is more efficient to use smart numbers or set up an algebraic equation.

I would plug in.
Let hourly wage = 4.
Let hours worked = 5.
Pay = 5*4 = 20.
Increased wage = (1.25)*4 = 5.
Hours needed at increased wage = 20/5 = 4.
Decrease in hours = 5-4 = 1.
Decrease/Old hours = 1/5 = 20%.

The correct answer is B.
