OG 11 - enough for 650?

Hello everyone,

Do you think OG 11 is sufficient to achieve a 650 level score? I want to achieve higher than this score, but I want my base level to be water tight. Do you think it’s a good strategy to achieve "mastery" with all OG 11 questions - i.e. be able to tackle any problem esp. in Quant in 2 minutes?

Would OG 11 be enough secure a 650 score in the first instance? Then build to more challenging questions?

Your views would be sincerely appreciated.

Maybe, but OG 12th edition is significantly more challenging

I bought the OG 11th edition and noticed that the last half of the book was misprinted after going through the PS and some of the DS questions.

The math section in the 12th edition seems to be a lot more challenging, and is closer to the questions you will see on test day.

One issue with the 12th edition is that the prep course companies are still working on digesting the material and creating their materials to go with the OG 12th edition.

Which section or precise questions were you referring to / note that had errors? I have read from reviews that the 12th edition is only a slightly modified version. Most questions (other than SC) have remained unchanged. Do you agree? Or does anyone else have any other views?

OG11 alone may be enough for you to get a 650 (depends on your abilities) but for most people I would say no. No official guide alone is sufficient to maximize your score because the official guides don't teach strategies or solution techniiques. They just offer great practice.

Get something along with the OG that will teach you. I use the OG Companion from GMATFix (for quant) because as far as I can tell it's the only book that shows how to use solving techniques and strategies specifically on the official (OG) questions.

For the verbal, ManhattanGMAT SC guides are great for Sentence Correction and from what others have written, I think Powerscore Critical Reasoning Bible is great for CR.

For essays, I'm not sure what's best.

I will definitely try that. Right now I am using MGMAT in addition to OG to learn maths concepts. I have found them very useful. Will keep you updated!

DS section has changed

Hi Tam,

The error my 11th edition had, was a printing error. There were a few minor errors I did notice in the math section, but most of them were minor notation errors.

The Manhattan GMAT website has a great breakdown of what has changed from the 11th to the 12th edition.

I didn't have too much time to go over the 11th edition before I switched to the 12th edition but the problems for PS and DS seemed a lot more difficult.

I would also agree with the other posters, that the answer key is not much of an improvement over the 11th edition.

Coming back to my original question. Does true "mastery" of ALL OG11 questions allow one to achieve a 650?

By "mastery" I mean, the ability to solve every questions in 2 mins. To be able to quickly spot traps. To know all the rules. If the question changed, to able to apply knowledge from previous questions. To have the confidence to anticipate the traps. To have a number of approaches to solve one type of question. To be able to recognise within seconds what the question is testing and the rule to apply. etc.
