IMO E

A/B/D - use of "being"...

C - awkward construction...."..had been sniper's bullet..."

I go for A. Being is usually, but not always wrong.
B in spite of is wrong, no contradiction in the sentence
C wordy
D/E don't look like a subordinate clause

I agree too that E is correct. However, what is the wrong usage of "being"?

being is "present tense"
e.g. He is being given an award.

So I guess, "being" does not fit too well in the context as "aving the right hand and arm being crippled by a sniper's bullet during the First World War" refers to something that has already happened.

Though is only my perspective.. what do you guys say?

wrt OG being is always wrong

being is wrong ABD gone
had been a bullet during the world war is illogical
so C also gone
