In the context of such sentences, i have seen 'this' only used as an adjective eg. 'this finding' or 'this activity' etc.

i believe that you are right, and that the question is wrong.

in my experience of formal english, and certainly in my experience of gmat questions, it is, in general, wrong to use "this" as a standalone pronoun.

like you, i have only seen "this" used correctly as an adjective.
