The occupancy percentage of a hotel is 88 percent for the three summer months and 44 percent for the rest of the year's months. Which of the following is closest to the average occupancy percentage for the whole year?
(A) 132
(B) 66
(C) 55
(D) 44
(E) 33

For Summer months 88 rooms occupied /100 hotel rooms
For rest of year 44 rooms occupied/100 hotel rooms

For whole year 132 rooms occupied /200 hotel rooms = .66

Weighted average concepts:

(3 * 88 + 9 *44)/12

44(3*2 +9)/12

44 *15/12

=55%

the avg will be less than 88 and greater than 44 .

Option B and C remain.

as 44 is for a greater period, the avg should be closer to 44 than to 88. Observe that 66 is equidistant from 88 and 44.

Option C.

This is a very common mistake we tempt to do!!I have learnt it the harder way.. as harsha said, we can "reconcile" our solution by checking with logic!

One summer month compensates for two off season months
88+44+44
so 88-44 = 44/3 = 15
44+15 = 59
59 is closer to 55 than 66
IMO C

This is a easy way to find average where u bring all the nos to the same level, chop the extra amount and distribute it evenly

Weighted averages are quick and easy to solve if you understand the concept behind them.

We have 3 months at 88% and 9 months at 44%. Since 9 is 3 times as much as 3, the 9 months will outweigh the 3 months 3:1 in our weighted average.

So, we can set up a number line:

44% ---x----Avg-------------3x---------88%

In other words, we're looking for an answer that's 1/4 of the way between 44 and 88.

88/44 = 11

44 + 11 = 55... choose (C).
