Hi Amy,

I am just starting to apply to business schools. I am looking at MS Accounting or MBA/MS Accounting programs. I graduated in May of 2007 with a 2.89 GPA from Binghamton University and scored a 640 ( Quant 44, Verbal 34)on the GMATs. I have 1 year part-time work experience in a small insurance office from my senior year of college and about 8 months experience working as a financial claim analyst for another insurance company. What type of schools do you think I have a real shot at? As of right now I am applying to Northeastern, UMass Boston, Baruch college, and SUNY Albany. I think I will probably get into SUNY Albany without a problem. Do you think i have a realistic chance at getting accepted into the other 3 programs?

Dear Phil:

The best way to gauge your chances at any program is to evaluate your GPA and GMAT score against the program's mid-50% ranges. If you fall in this range, then your chances of being invited to interview are pretty good. If you are below that range, then it would probably be a good idea to retake the GMAT. With minimal experience post-undergraduate and a GPA below a 3.0, it is imperative you present a strong application in terms of essays, interview and recommendations. If your GMAT is not above the average, then you might retake it as you will need a higher score to balance out your GPA. Likewise, if interviews are by request versus by invitation, than it would be in your best interest to request the interview to make your case to the admissions committee.
