B) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields(there are two events here and both can't be stated with a "had", no requirement of "had" with the sun.)

C) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields(Correct as placement of "had" is correct and shows that theory came afterward).

D) inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields(It shows that the theory and Nile inundating the banks ,both happen together which is wrong, need a "had" in first event).
