For democracy to survive, it is imperative that the average citizen be able to develop informed opinions about important policy issues. In today's society, this means that citizens must be able to develop informed opinions on many scientific subjects, from ecosystems to defence system. Yet, as scientific knowledge advances, the average citizen is increasingly unable to absorb enough information to develop informed opinions on many important issues.

Of the following, which one follows logically from the passage?

(A) Scientists have a duty to educate the public.

(B) The survival of democracy is threatened by the advance of scientific knowledge.

(C) Every citizen has a duty to and can become scientifically literate.

(D) The most effective democracy is one that is the most scientifically unsophisticated.

(E) Democracy will survive if there are at least some citizens who are capable of developing informed opinions on important scientific issues.

I reached B by POE... battle is only between B and E

A) extreme.. it is impossbile and unnecessary to educate all
C) extreme
D) democracy is not scientific backwardness

I have opted out E : few people cannot make entire democracy
I have opted B: "Japanese Safe nuclear reactor = cheap power " can be accepted by 'un-educated mob'.

Wow !! Nice catch .... i opted for E knowing that its pointing at some citizens , i was very confused .... but now if i try to write down the CR into eqtns , the only answer i get is B.

Arent u using a lot of outside knowledge to eliminate a few options.

Passage looks generic+ some options extreme+ know how democracy+too much news about recent disasters+gimme played by leaders on poor people

1. For democracy to survive, average citizens must have informed opinions
2. These opinions include scentific subjects
3. As science advances it becomes harder for the average citizen to understand and thus develop an informed opinion

A. Incorrect. The passage never says whose duty it is to inform the public

B. Correct. If the average citizen is no longer informed democracy can not survive based on point 1 in the passage. Thus advances in science threaten democracy.

C. Incorrect. The passage talks about average citizens, not all citizens.

D. Incorrect. That is never said. People just have to understand science.

E. Incorrect. Again we are talking about average citizens. Here they talk about "some citizens". That is not the same just as how "every citizen" is not the same in C.
