Since the new publisher took control, a news magazine's covers have featured only models and movie stars. Previously, the covers had displayed only politicians, soldiers, and business leaders. A leading gossip columnist claimed that the changes made the magazine relevant again. However, many newspaper editorials disagreed and suggested that the new publisher is more interested in boosting sales than in reporting important news events.

Which of the following is an assumption necessary for the argument made by the gossip columnist's opponents?

A The charitable activities of models and movie stars often focus public attention on pressing problems.
B Final authority for choosing the cover subject of the magazine lies with the publisher.
C A magazine can boost sales while highlighting the coverage of important world leaders.
D Some of the movie stars featured are now running for political office.
E Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers.

A The charitable activities of models and movie stars often focus public attention on pressing problems.
Incorrect : We cant make any assumption about charitable activities of movie stars from the passage above.

B Final authority for choosing the cover subject of the magazine lies with the publisher.
Correct : While suggesting that new publisher is interested in boosting sales, the opponents obviously must have assumed that new publisher is the only one who chooses the cover subject of the magazine.

C A magazine can boost sales while highlighting the coverage of important world leaders.
Incorrect : Nothing is mentioned about 'WORLD LEADERS' in the passage above.

D Some of the movie stars featured are now running for political office.
Incorrect : How does it matter what they are doing NOW?

E Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers.
Incorrect : Goes into unnecessary details.

A) The charitable activities of models and movie stars often focus public attention on pressing problems.
------->The stimulus is not talking abt the work done by the models and movie stars. Only the pictures of them on the magazine's coverpage. Irrelavent choice. Out of the scope.
B) Final authority for choosing the cover subject of the magazine lies with the publisher. hold it

C) A magazine can boost sales while highlighting the coverage of important world leaders.
Probably this can be true in real world. But again the stuimulus is talking about only the cover page of magazine with models and movie stars. Irrelavant ans. So out of the scope.

D) Some of the movie stars featured are now running for political office.
The stimuls is not talking any thing about the movie stars. It is talking abt the cover page of magazine with models and movie stars. Irrelavant ans. So out of the scope.

E) Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers.
There is now way we can assume that purchase rate is increated more than three times. Too specific. OOS.

IMO B sud be the ans

One more for E

Counter argument by newspaper editorials against new publisher shoule be based upon some "assumption". How can we critic someone without having any substantial claim???

SO E does the job...newspaper editorials / gossip columnist’s opponents claims that the NEW news magazine is 3 times costlier than older one with politicians on its cover page...

If we apply Denial/Negate test to E

Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are NOT purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers.

If the assumption passes for Negate Test then the opponents point falls apart....

I think it should be B. The last sentence says 'many newspaper editorials disagreed and suggested that the new publisher is more interested in boosting sales than in reporting important news events. '

So, the opponents are clearly assuming that the publisher has the final say.

Regarding E, I think its a leap. First is the 3 times sales talk and second can we really assume news about celebrities is not an important news event. Maybe not in real life but for the sake of the argument.

Anyway I may be way off here, lets wait for the OA.
