Correct Answer: doubling to 12 the number of satellites now known to orbit
OG says that the phrase cannot point to a specific noun. Does it mean "cameras" and "moon circling uranus"? How can I make sure myself that the -ing form is actually expanding the ideas of the first sentence?
  • The Parthenon was a church from 1204 until 1456, when Athens was taken by General Mohammed the Conqueror, the Turkish sultan, who established a mosque in the building and used the Acropolis as a fortress.
The original sentence is correct, but I chose "establishing a mosque in the building and using the Acropolis as". This is because I am confused by the -ing form.
  • Although a surge in retail sales has raised hopes that a recovery is finally underway, many economists say that without a large amount of spending the recovery might not last.
Perfect tense always makes me puzzled. How to eliminated choice such as "had raised hopes" quickly?

First one yes.

Second one is defining turkish sultan is done with his things and he is not continuing things. so established is appropriate.

e.g. antest07, who joined recently, asked 3 questions in one post and did not read the rules. B-)

Thanks for your reply, but I still have some double on the 1st and 3rd questions.

For the 1st question, why should we use "doubling" instead of doubles? OG says that "doubling" modifies the first clause, but it seems weird that the six moons "doubling" by themselves...

For the 3rd question, I understand that present perfect tense is used to describe action continue from the past. However, this is also my weakness. How can we be so sure that the action is still continuing? May be the "hope raised" was past, and past tense may still be applied here?

which is defining Uranus before doubles and assume which is not there again double will not give the meaning that we intend.

About third if you would have given other choices then it would have been easy to select why those are not correct, cannot say anything now.

About third, I would give you a modified version as it can frustrate me:
"raised hopes that a recovery is finally underway,"

How would this fit here

Although a surge in retail sales raised hopes that a recovery is finally underway, many economists say that without a large amount of spending the recovery might not last.

It means economists are saying about something which happened in past... this construction would have been viable but we need to consider that sentence is starting with Although ie there has to be a logical flow in the sentence.

So, present tense is what we need... depending on the meaning you need present perfect or simple present tense.
