New Year's Eve performance

by gmatnmein2010 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:45 am
According to the critic, in no other recorded concert did a pianist master the passionate lyricism of Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" as did Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance in 1961.
(A) did Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance in 1961
(B) had Sviatoslav Richer's 1961New Year's Eve performance
(C) in Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance of 1961
(D) Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance of 1961 did
(E) Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance in 1961

I would choose D

A- I believe the helping verb "did" needs to be at the end of the clause

B- "had" is incorrect

C- Inpropoper comparison, this answer needs the helping verb "did"

D- correct

E- inproper comparison, comparing a performance with mastering a performance.

I don't know the proper rules yet... but I had it down to A & D, but I choose A because I think Performance IN, is correct vs. performance of.

My answer is C.

Let me rephrase and explain parallelism in C:
No Pianist mastered the passionate lyricism of Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" in any recorded concert as in Sviatoslav Richer's New Year's Eve performance of 1961

The original sentence compares illogical items. The non-underlined portion of the sentence is set up to compare what happens in no other recorded concert. The non-underlined portion must compare what happens in the "other" performance referred to.The only option that follows the structure of the non-underlined portion of the sentence by comparing what happens in no other recorded concert to what happens in Sviatoslav's performance is choice C.

Choices B, D, and E illogically compare the actions of a pianist to those of a performance. A parallel, logical comparison must compare what happens in certain concerts to what happens in a specific performance.

IMOThe correct answer is C.
