Hi,

I am about to take my GMAT in 10 days and have made a list in my mind of some b schools where i will be applying in R1. I have only two years of work experience. Is it common for candidates like me to be accepted into the 5-15 ranked B schools? I am confident I can make a good application, but when I see the average work ex on Uni websites, I get intimidated. Is it something that should stop me from applying this year? Or should I go ahead and give it a chance?

Well it's always a good idea to look at the school averages to give you an idea of what sort of candidate they are looking for. So Harvard and Stanford may be looking for younger candidates, (still with a bit more experience), but other schools look for more experienced. Also keep in mind than the average months worked is usually calculated from the date not of admission, but from when the program starts, which means that you'll have another year, bringing you closer to the average. Finally, the concern is less the "technical number" of how many months, as it is the experience that this will allow you to gain, and the stories you can get out of it. So, people with one or two years of experience, usually don;t have such strong stories because of the nature of first-year jobs. But if you DO have those stories, then you are in much better shape.

Hey! Two years is not bad! That's good work ex anyway! You can actually go ahead and apply, though i'd like you to seek some help on this. My friends went in to the chopras, for assistance on countries and universities.I would like to mention to you, that they are happily studying abroad now! So i'd suggest, go check 'em out!

That was helpful.

So, if the session I am applying for starts in Fall 2012, I get to quote my work experience in my applications as what it will be in Fall 2012? I had no clue about that! That adds a whole year. And is this the case for all the B school apps?
