Need help to prepare for CR

Expert replies
by Winner2013 » Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:27 am
Hi All,

I have been preparing for GMAT for about 4 months now. However, I feel I am not improving on my Critical reasoning section. I have finished studying following so far :
1. Manhattan CR strategy guide
2. OG and Verbal 2nd edition CR questions
3. CR strategies from Kaplan GMAT premier

If say I solve 16 CR questions : almost every time I get only 12 correct. I never complete the questions in required time.

I need to improve on accuracy and pacing. Please help. I get decent score on quant and have improved on SC now. I am scared that CR will bring my score down. Do you think any private tuition will help?

Thanks in advance,
Pj

Hi PJ,

So 12/16 tells me you have a fairly good idea of how to do CR, but your strategy is falling apart on the harder-level questions. I'd ask yourself 2 questions: 1) what is my step-by-step strategy for all CR? and 2) what types of CR Q's am I getting wrong (weaken, bolded statement, complete the passage, etc). Then you can start to refine. To answer #2, you might need to go back through your last 30-40 incorrect CR and categorize them with an Error Log.

I'd re-examine how you use your scratch paper and whether you're effectively breaking down the question stem's information and restating the question prior to making a prediction. There's a lot of work that you can do before looking at the answer choices.

I don't know how soon your test is, but you might also benefit from looking at Powerscore CR. My guess is the Kaplan GMAT Premier's strategies are pretty basic.

Good luck! :-)
