Let x=2, implying that there are only 2 pickets.
Length of the 2 pickets = 2(1/2) = 1 inch.
The space between them = 6 inches.
Total length = 1+6 = 7 inches.
Total length in feet = 7/12. This is our target.
Now we plug x=2 into the answers to see which yields our target of 7/12.
