need explanation

by neha.patni » Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:05 pm
Analyzing campaign expenditures, the media has had as a focus the high costs and low, ethics of campaign finance, but they have generally overlooked the cost of actually administering elections, which includes facilities, transport, printing, staffing, and technology.

A. Analyzing campaign expenditures, the media have focused on
B. In analyzing campaign expenditures, the media have focused on

which one is correct and why?

Hi Neha,

I would like to see all the choices. But in the ones presented, I find B to be CORRECT.

First of all, media is the plural of medium. So any choice with 'media has' can straight away be avoided. [it doesnt help here though :) ]

A seems incorrect because it gives the meaning that the media have focussed... while it was analyzing camp. exp. And it will not modify the clause "they have generally overlooked..."

However, B states that "In analyzing campaign expenditures" media have done
1. have focused on high costs and low, ethics of campaign finance
2. generally overlooked the cost of actually administering elections

Sorry for this confusing post. But hope, you get what I am trying to say.

IMO B.

"they" refers to media. So "have" is used.

"they" correctly modifies media "in analyzing campaign expenditures".

B is better.

Are you guys writing AWA in practice exams. I wrote my first practice test with AWA yesterday and honestly it does impact your stamina.
