The public library allocated the revenues it received from the recently passed tax initiative to the purchasing of more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers.

(A) to the purchasing of more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers

(B) in order to purchase more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers

(C) so as to purchase more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers

(D) so that more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers could be purchased

(E) for the purchase of more than two thousand books, fifty journal subscriptions, and fifteen computers

OA A

I can't decide which one to go with...

I am confused with E option as I can't find anything wrong with it

If you separate the modifiers, we could read as"

"The public library allocated the revenues to the purchasing of more than two thousand books................"

correct idom should be "allocated to" so A makes most sense..

As @Chufus pointed out: Choice A is the only one that preserves and communicates the meaning effectively.

The library allocated the revenues to the abc...

The other choices state the purpose of allocation of revenues and not necessarily to what the revenues were allocated.

For example:

The board of directors allocated 1 hour every day to meet with the regional managers of the company for the purpose of getting the insights on the operations management.

The blue highlighted portion indicates the entity to which the allocation of 1 hour was done.
The green highlighted portion indicates the purpose for the allocation of 1 hour to the entity.

From meaning perspective, all choices except A indicate the purpose of allocation, which is not the intended meaning.

Hi Chufus,

Is the word purchasing correct in option A?????
It is correct. Although "purchase of" may have been better since we have a noun that can serve the purpose of verb-ing here "purchasing".
