Need assistance in choosing MBA program and School

Hi All,

I have a 7 yr work experience in IT. I have worked at both offshore and onshore location. I have a GMAT score of 680(Q - 50, V - 31). I want to go for MBA, but I want a program that is directly related to IT. I have been researching a bit, but I am bit confused. Most of the school is offering dual degree and I am not sure, If I want that. Can anyone guide me in finding a program and also best school? Moreover, is my score good enough to get me in good school.

Hi,

You have decent profile with average GMAT and solid work experience. For IT you can target b-schools like Tepper, Cornell, IE, Georgia Tech, Berkeley Haas, NYU Stern, Boston University these are top b-school for IT careers. GMAT won't be an issue unless you are confident enough about scoring 50+ points when you retake test. Focus on your application essays/recommendations and starting early is the key to success. Thanks for your query. I would actually start with the premise of why IT, what your goals are post MBA - is that to utilise your prior experience in IT and want to take on more senior role? Are you happy to explore Operations role?
A decision to undertake education, based on which functional role you are keen on, is a great starting point but you need to flesh that out a bit - what aspects of a program is useful? What learning methods work for you? How diverse a class do you want? Believe me when I say, I used to think these aspects do not make a difference but they so critically do and hence a knowledge of how these work are very important to your decision making. If you are looking at technology schools, consider technology areas in the US - California, Texas, Arizona, Washington to start with. Most of the schools there have strong IT focus. Tepper stands out in my view.
680 is definitely a low score but having said that, your fit and essays are equally if not more important. Think long about where you see yourself long term, short term, your current scenario, what skills do you need to reach your goals and how will a particular MBA help you achieve the skills.

Hi there, I am a non working professional who has worked with O&M Mumbai for almost 3 and a half years. I left the company as I wanted to continue my higher education and pursue an MBA. Now I'm pondering whether to go abroad or study in India. I have always been keen on going abroad to study and although I enjoyed working in Delhi, I have always wanted to work abroad too. However I'm very doubtful as I feel getting a job thereafter can be very difficult especially in the US and the UK. Could anyone help me with this decision?

Hey there. I am working in Jebel Ali Carton in Dubai. I too had the same problem before deciding on my MBA and finally decided to go to Dubai. It was definitely the best decision I have ever made and studying in a foreign country was a spectacular experience. I personally feel you should definitely do your MBA from abroad.

Hey, thanks that sounds great. But do the colleges in the Middle East provide good placements as compared to the ones in the US and UK?

The placements are great if you do your MBA from a reputed college and I would definitely recommend places like Dubai, Singapore or Australia, etc. as it is much easier to get work here and excellent pay packages. The US and UK have very stringent visa restrictions and there is always a risk that you may end up without any work there and have to come back to India.

The colleges I know of in Dubai are MBS, SP Jain Global School of Management & Hult International Business School. There are a few more that you can explore but I think those 3 are the top ones. Also you should look into Australia and Singapore.
