What does "he" refer to in option D?

I think only B is acceptable...

A has no verb. You can't say "supporting" his riflemen with cavalry.
C has the same error as A.
D has an ambiguous pronoun, because Napolean is a possessive.
E has same error as A and C.

So there's really only B, even though I don't think B is really correct, "battle strategy focused on infantry maneuvers, and [battle strategy] had supported his riflemen with cavalry.

Wait...I see it now. Author is intending D to be the right answer, because the non-bold part has "his"...so this question is not good then.
Yep.

I did the same analysis as you uwhusky.

But unfortunately OA is D. I did not understand how he can refer to possessive.

Answer is (B)

A. but supporting --> does not align with "focused"
B. and had supported --> perfect!!!
C. but with supporting --> does not align with "focused"
D. although he supported --> the subject is the strategy, not Napoleon.
E. and even though supporting --> does not align with "focused"

I don't think it's a good idea to "accept" this answer in your mind. I am almost 99% certain that GMAT doesn't like the usage of pronoun with possessive has antecedent. In fact, MGMAT SC book specifically covered this error.

So personally I would cross this question off and move on.

Is the source reliable. D is highly prone to be rejected in very first place. In fact, I eliminated this the moment I saw HE.

IMO C.

Sometimes, adverbial modifier comes with contrasting words such as while, but, eventually etc.

So I accept BUT in C as it does not affect the effect the adverbial modifier introduces.

What does "he" refer to in option D?
This is how i arrived at D. "Focused mainly" => there has to be although or but in the underlined part. so B and E are out.
(A) but supporting is not parallel to focused.
(C) same as above.
(D) this is parallel. he refers only to Napolean unambiguously. if reject D saying that there is pronoun ambiguity, then what about "his" in the non underlined portion?

His is a possessive and can refer to a possessive. He cannot.

Hope this helps!!

change the subject and verb of the official sc question and you have a new question ready...
Changing the subject and verb does not change the rules that have been tested in a SC question...

The Iroquois were primarily planters, but supplementing their cultivation of maize, squash, and beans with
fishing and hunting.

(A) but supplementing
(B) and had supplemented
(C) and even though they supplemented
(D) although they supplemented
(E) but with supplementing
