My Chances to get admissions in Top 20 B scjools

Hi,

I have done my schooling and college with a GPA of 3 in India. While in college I ran a theater group and performed shows in the city. I did my graduation in Mechanical engineering and was in top 10 performers in all semesters. I finished my enginnering in 2006. I got a job in a retail company in 2006 in Tesco and still working as a software engineer. Have a good experience in the company and added value to the business of company. Also side by side I did a network marketing business in 2007 I made and managed a network of around 2000 people under me and motivated them but due to unavoidable circumstances the company closed its operations. Then in 2008 i started a restaurant business with my partners of earlier business but again due to recession my partners lost their jobs due to which it has to be closed. In 2009 I started a website development work under which I am making a website for the people of country to increase their knowledge of thier rights and how to avail your rights at free of cost, which is still under development.
I have got a GMAT score of 710. Could you please let me know the chances of getting in top 20 B schools ? and please help me with your suggestions. Waiting for your reply.

Dear Amit,

There is always a chance if you are close to or above the average GMAT/GPA of a school and present a compelling, strong overall application. In assessing where you stand against other schools, I think you would have a better chance with a school in the 15-40 range than the top 20. While you have a good GMAT, your GPA is below average. As an applicant from India, you face tough competition as you have a similar profile to large percentage of the global MBA applicant pool. In terms of strategy, I think you should target schools where your GMAT is above the school's average and the schools is a good match for your career goals. You will also need to distinguish yourself from the similar applicants and showcase your leadership potential/experiences.

Few questions

Hi,

Thankyou for the reply. But few more questions. Actually the 3 GPA which i have mentioned was my calculation. I am not sure as how it is calculated. Because in India we get the result in percentages. My percentage result is 78%. Please let me know equivalent GPA.
Also please specfically give me some suggestions so that i can improve my profile for Top 20.

Dear Abhishek,

To get an accurate GPA conversion, you might want to have your transcript evaluated by a credentialing service like World Evaluation Services. They can give you the best conversion that would be accpeted by most schools. I think your GPA is probably higher than a 3 if you have 78%, but paying for an evaluation is the most definitive way to know. In addition to retaking the GMAT, the best things you can do to increase your chances at a top 20 are to have some successful leadership experiences you can write about in your essays and well-thought, realistic career goals that necessitate earning a MBA.

non traditional backround

Hi,

I am a High School Teacher in Canada and I have decided that I want to switch careers and pursue an MBA in the United States. I am currently studying for the GMAT but I am worried that I may not be considered due to my non traditional background. I have been teaching for 6 years and have an undergraduate degree in Psych and Political Science. My GPA for this degree is 3.0 but I have a 3.73 for my B.Ed (both from University of Toronto. Will b schools look at both gpas and do I have a real shot? I feel I have a background that can really add to diversity in the classroom.

Dear Anita,

Being a school teacher is not a negative, but it will be important for you to present realistic career goals when combining your background and a MBA. Focus on the transferable skills you have developed in your experience on your resume and use business terms. Both of your degrees will be evaluated. However, I'm not sure how you should report your GPA. Did you do one degree after the other or did you graduate with dual degrees? I'm thinking you should either average the GPAs if done back to back or should report the one for your B.Ed. Basically, you want to match what your transcript shows as your cumulative GPA.
