considering 1)x+y=17 :
since positive numbers.. the diff combinations of (x,y) range from (0,17),(1,16)..(16,1),(17,0).
Range is simply the highest - lowest value in the set.

But 17 will anyway be the largest and 0 will the smallest number in the set.
therefore Range = (17-0)=17

1 is sufficient.

consider 2: 2)x-y=3
x=y+3
(x,y) can be (3,0),(4,1),(5,2),(6,3) etc.. even when y=17, x=20.
The minimum value in the set is 0. But maximum value can't be determined as x,y varies.

Hence 2 is not sufficient.

In Total , 1 Alone. A

but 0 aint a positive number..its a neutral number.

what am i doing wrong.. if the question said what is the range of postive integers in the set -4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4

range wud be 4-1=3 right?

ahh.. range of positive numbers.. first time i'm hearing something like that.

I presume in the question when the question was given, it was intended to say that x and y are positive and not less than 0 in the set

Implying that 0 is the lowest element in the set. I think other than that positive doesn't impact anything on the numbers.

Range is the total number of intervals between the highest and the lowest element in the set.

Btw.. what's the source of the question??

The question seems to be wrongly transcribed.

The correct question should be
"what is the range of the integers in the given set S, for positive integers x and y, where S contains 0,3,5,10,17,x and y?" Then A is the answer.

If the question says,
"what is the range of the positive integers in the given set S, for integers x and y, where S contains 0,3,5,10,17,x and y?", The answer will be C.

Yes, the range of positive integers is be 4-1 =3 in the case above. 0 is not a positive integer (or negative for that matter).
Cheers!
