If 500 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to x and 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to y,which mutiple of 100 is closest to x+y?

1)x<500
2)y<400
OA : E
Need explainations please.

is statement 2 supposed to read y<400?

if so and E.

if 500 = closest 100 multiple then x must be between 450 - 549 (anything above 549 rounds up to 600 and anything below 450 rounds down to 400)

similarly y must be between 350-449.

1. insuff since 450+350 = 800 but 450 +449 rounds up to 900
2. insuff since 450 + 350 = 800 and 549+350 rounds up to 900

1 and 2 insuff since 499+399 = 898 = 900 and 450+350 = 800.

hope this helps.
