Look at the parallelism between Balzac drank.... and ... did not bother. Both in the past tense as you are talking about a moment in time. It gets confusing with the 'have drunk' at the end of the sentence, but this modifier that is talking about events over a period of time - thus you would use the past perfect as was done.
