Howler monkeys, long believed to be herbivores, have recently been observed scavenging for eggs in the forests near Porto Alegre, Brazil

A. to be herbivores, have
B. to being herbivore, have
C. to be herbivore, has
D. to have been herbivores, were
E. to be herbivores, was
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

A. to be herbivores, have
B. to being herbivore, have
C. to be herbivore, has
D. to have been herbivores, were
E. to be herbivores, was
C and E are out as SV agreement error. we have plural subject and singular verb.
B is out because of being. Being is always almost wrong on gmat. Moreover, it changes the meaning of the sentence.
D is also wrong....The usage of "to have been" takes the sentence in past. It sounds like the monkeys were believed but not anymore. So this choice also changes the meaning of the sentence.
I think OA is A

Hi All,

This SC is built on a few grammar rules:

1) The idiom "believed....to be". Eliminate B and D.

2) The plural noun "howler monkeys", which requires the use of the plural noun "herbivores." Eliminate C

3) The proper verb for the phrase "<verb>....recently been observed". Eliminate E

Final Answer: A
