We need to maintain parallelism .

We cant compare 1000 people to just one person . can we ?

Same goes to this case .

The grounds for comparison should be parallel.

If C use "the libraries" , C is still wrong.

why here comparison of action in C is wrong? , Pls, explain

because we are not saying that serving of Mo and serving of Libraries are done in the same way but we are saying that Lib and Mo is similar in that Lib and Mo do the same action of serving

is that right"

though many persons say that "like" is used to compare nouns, "as" is used to compare action. I am confused. is the above thing is right?

AS can be used in two forms--- preposition and to compare two clauses...depending upon the sense of the sentence.

here ...

Early medieval monasteries ,while clearly less accessible to outsiders, often served as repositories for texts as does the modern library .

The bold letters mean that--- the modern library also serves as repositories for texts....

See here the first comma with "while clearly less accessible to outsiders" is used to describe medieval monasteries
and

an comparison is given by , like modem libraries.

so it has to be A ....
There are many cases when we put the non-essential part of the sentence within commas

So in the below sentence the non-essential part of the sentence is " like modern libraries", so "while clearly less accessible to outsiders," should still modify the medieval monasteries and not modern libraries

Early medieval monasteries,like modern libraries,while clearly less accessible to outsiders, often served as repositories for texts

so in my opinion option D is also a strong contender for the right answer.

Please let me know if you all disagree !

Acc to me,

A may be best ans among these choices but actually this is a wrong sentence.

here we are comparing verb (often served as repositories for texts) with noun (modern libraries ) , which is obviously not intended.


Idealy, it should be like

Early medieval monasteries, while clearly less accessible to outsiders, often served as repositories for texts, as does the modern libraries


OR


Early medieval monasteries, while clearly less accessible to outsiders, like modern libraries often served as repositories for texts.


Experts ... Ron, Stacy.. Plz comment....

Here's the OE from Kaplan 800: You have to make a comparison between early medieval monasteries and modern libraries, while also taking into account a modifier for those early medieval monasteries. The modifier, "while clearly less accessible to outsiders," must come directly next to early medieval monasteries, so (B) and (D) are out. Additionally, in (B), it's not clear what they refers to. Now, of the remaining options, (A), (C), and (E), which phrasing works best-like modern libraries or as does the modern library7 The second option is incorrect, as in choice (C); libraries needs to be plural in order to parallel monasteries. And finally, eliminate (E) because acted like modern libraries act is wordier and clumsier than like modern libraries. (A) is the correct answer.
