Moghul emperors

by TOPGMAT » Fri Nov 19, 2010 12:32 pm
The moghul emperors of india devised an administrative machine, a system of land tenure, and a codified method of collecting revenue, all of which long outlasted their rule.

a)
b) codified method of revenue collection
c) codified a method of collecting revenue.

OA: Later

I think its C
Parallelism
devised an administrative machine
codified a method of collecting revenue

and 'all' refers to both.(both outlasted their rule)

IMO a

The moghul emperors of india devised an administrative machine, a system of land tenure, and a codified method of collecting revenue, all of which long outlasted their rule.

There are 3 items in the list:

1) an administrative machine
2) a system of land tenure
3) a codified method of collecting revenue

See all the 3 items are preceded by an article (an/a). We want to preserve || ism; therefore,we can eliminate B and C because they do not use an article before codified.

what is the OA?

i thought you were confused between those 2 thats why you have posted them only
as in gmat we search for better answer(good among other good answers...) i think correct question would have helped

Parallel construction is pretty obvious in this question but if you get confused its pretty simple to check ..

In the second and third option if you read it with devised i.e devised codified ...... then becomes pretty apparent that it is incorrect..

Also, it becomes obvious that 'devised a codified' is required.

I am still confused between A and C. Cant we have devised and codified in parallel?
Considering that OA is A, I'm sure the comma and 'and' would also have a role to play. Can someone shed some light on this?
