I doubt if "an" is going for ambiguous reference. Whether it is referring to Erasmus's tomb or Switzerland's Basel Munster.

Please correct me..???

The entire noun phrase "an architectural monument" is an appositive, fancy way for saying a noun or noun phrase that renames the closest noun.
In this case, Basel Munster is the closest noun, and hence is being modified.
